How can I avoid ATM surcharges?

Use ATMs owned by your own bank.

Look for other ATMs that don't surcharge. Avoid relying upon ATMs in convenience stores, hotels, casinos, restaurants, and similar locations, as they are most likely to impose high surcharges.

Plan ahead, and withdraw more cash at a time.

Consider other methods of obtaining cash:

  • Merchants that accept ATM cards for purchases ("point-of-sale" transactions) often will add a cash withdrawal to the purchase price without imposing a surcharge.
  • Supermarkets and other businesses frequently offer check cashing services, usually for a lower fee than ATM surcharges.
  • When traveling, use travelers checks, personal checks, or credit cards, or try cashing a check at your hotel rather than using an ATM card.

The PIRGs (Public Interest Research Groups) offer recommendations for reducing bank fees.
