Tips for finding ATMs that don't impose surcharges

Look for a "no surcharge" logo or sign.

Ask your own bank to help you find convenient locations of surcharge-free ATMs.

Call or visit banks that don't impose surcharges, and ask them for a directory of their ATM locations. (Credit unions and smaller banks are less likely to impose surcharges than large banks. The only large bank that doesn't impose surcharges on most of its ATMs is Washington Mutual, which operates in Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Texas, Utah and Washington.)

Consult the national ATM networks' locator services. (But note that these won't tell you which ATMs impose surcharges.)

Consult a directory of surcharge-free ATMs. (Most of the following directories are incomplete, but they're a good place to start.)

[NOTE: The links to surcharge-free ATM directories have been removed from this page. Most or all directories that purport to list surcharge-free ATMs actually include selective-surcharge ATMs and/or are several years out of date.]
